A new leaked video reveals Xiaomi’s take on the up-and-coming foldable phone movement, according to The Verge. While the device in the video features a large screen, its overall size isn’t compromised since its sides can bend backward.Global Smartphone Shipment Forecast, by Screen SizeIn an open position, the foldable screen appears to function as a tablet. When folded, the device functions as a smartphone and is seemingly similar in size to popular phablets, such as Apple’s Plus family of iPhones. Xiaomi is just the latest phone maker to jump on the trend: Samsung, Lenovo, LG, Huawei, and others are embracing foldable phones with launch plans set for this year, while Apple plans to enter the space in 2020.
Smartphone vendors understand that the market is ripe for the emergence of foldable phones, given that consumers are quickly taking to phablets. Phablets, or large-sized screens of 5.5 inches and above, are already the leading smartphone form factor; these devices are expected to account for two-thirds (67%) of all smartphone shipments in 2018, up from 43% a year earlier, and that share will jump to 88% of overall shipment volume by 2022.
Moreover, smartphones with 6- to 7-inch screens became the most prominent smartphone size segment for the first time in Q3 2018, and will continue to lead in the years ahead. But there’s a limit to how large screens can become, and foldable phones represent a feasible solution to expand screen sizes without them becoming so large they curb one-hand usage or sacrifice portability.
As 5G comes into play, foldable phones will likely have a major role in reviving the stagnant global smartphone market since the devices are paramount to evolving consumer behavior. 2017 was the first year the global smartphone market saw sales decline annually, and global demand for smartphones is expected to have stalled in 2018 as well.
As smartphone manufacturers pivot to foldable phones with 5G compatibility, it will likely propel consumers to upgrade to these new devices. That’s because 5G will enable consumers to more efficiently use their smartphones for richer activities, like streaming video and playing video games, and foldable screens’ ability to expand the real estate would enable them to offer the best viewing experience.
